Why ADAPT?
Before 1990 very few ordinary people had been able to get treatment for their drug and alcohol problems in what was already recognised as the most effective setting, i.e. where detoxification and rehabilitation were offered on the same site in an intensive residential treatment programme.
Most services in this category were very selective and beyond the reach the majority of the population. Yet the need was greater than ever before, with more and more people becoming dependent on substances and more and more lives being blighted in the process.
The residential centres
ADAPT was founded as a charity to change this situation. In 1990, we acquired Barley Wood, near Bristol, our first residential centre and opened its doors to everyone in need of our services who was supported by statutory resources.. Not surprisingly, the demand for places was so great that, in 1997, we opened The Diana, Princess of Wales Treatment Centre in Norfolk.
Today both centres enjoy an international reputation for working with the whole spectrum of special needs groups, as well as "mainstream" clients from across Britain and beyond. They have helped thousands of people to turn their lives around.
Criminal justice services
From their earliest days, ADAPT's centres have worked successfully with
criminal justice referrals and others with a long history of offending.
This expertise in helping to break the link between drugs and crime was
recognised by the Prison Service in 1999 with the award of our first in-prison
CARAT contracts.
Our custodial services have since grown considerably and today we provide CARAT and/or rehabilitation teams in 23 UK prisons.
On the wider stage
As well as providing crucial services, ADAPT is represented on a wide
range of national and international bodies and plays a full part in keeping
addiction services in the public eye and lobbying to ensure that they
remain viable and available. We are members of the Major Providers Group,
the European Association for the Treatment of Addiction, the Federation
of Drug and Alcohol Professionals, DrugScope and the International Council
on Alcohol and Addictions, amongst others.
Our set up
We emploly around 240 staff from our various sites and we are administered
by a small head office in London. Our Council
of Management is chaired by Lord Taverne QC and our chief executive
and founder, Brian Arbery, is well known for his extensive experience
in developing and operating substance misuse services.
Our finances
Our annual turnover is in the region of £6.5 million. Most of this is
derived from residential treatment and service contract fees but we rely
on charitable donations to keep
our centres going.
Our status
ADAPT is a registered charity no. 803110 and company limited by guarantee,
