ADAPT is contracted by the Prison Service to provide CARAT and/or drug rehabilitation services in a substantial number of prisons in Eastern England and the Midlands and one prison in Yorkshire.
CARAT (Counselling, Assessment, Referral, Advice and Throughcare) services are available in all prisons in England and Wales, forming a fundamental part of the Prison Services drug treatment framework. The scheme offers services to those with drug and alcohol issues whilst in prison and helps set up support networks for clients on release.
CARAT's primary task is to offer in-depth assessments to clients on their drug/alcohol issues. This is carried out on a one-to-one basis and leads to the design of an individual care plan. CARATs also offer interventions such as individual counselling, in-cell packs, short-duration group work, referrals to other services and general advice.
Many prisons now also provide drug rehabilitation programmes. ADAPT manages accredited cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based programmes within three. The length of the programme will relate to the severity of the client's drug/alcohol problems and vary between six and 16 weeks.
